Women’s and Gender Studies in collaboration with Sexual Assault Awareness Week @ MIT present,

THE LINE

SEX. POWER. CONSENT. PLEASURE.

Tuesday, April 27, 2010

7PM

6-120

A young woman is raped when a one-night stand far from home goes terribly wrong. In the aftermath, as she struggles to make sense of what happened, she decides to make a film about the relationship between her own experience and the tangle of political, legal, and cultural questions that surround issues of sex and consent. Using a hidden camera, filmmaker Nancy Schwartzman goes head-to-head with the man who assaulted her, recording their conversation in an attempt to move through the trauma of her experience and achieve a better understanding of the sometimes ambiguous line between consent and coercion. The result is a powerful documentary about the terrible personal reality of rape and sexual violence — and the more complicated and ambivalent ways sexual assault is often framed and understood in the wider culture.

Film duration: 24 minutes

Discussion with director Nancy Schwartzman to follow

*Film will be screened with English subtitles*

*ASL interpreters will be present*

*Wheel chair accessibility available through the Infinite Corridor in building 8 or through the ramp at building 14.*

From the press release:

Join us for a vigil in solidarity with victims and survivors of domestic violence and show your support by handing out Valentines with messages of hope.

5:00 pm Friday, February 12,
on the steps of Arlington Street Church 351 Boylston Street
(corner of Boylston St. and Arlington St.)

Additional info here at VDay Vigil:

“…spread the word that love shouldn’t hurt and that REAL lovers don’t abuse. This is an especially important reminder on the weekend of Valentine’s Day, a day dedicated to the celebration of love.

Renewal House organized this Valentine’s Day Vigil in response to the alarming surge in domestic violence homicides in Massachusetts in 2010 — nine in total so far. We felt compelled to reach out to the community to raise awareness and send a positive message of hope. Unfortunately, we cannot save those who have already lost their lives, but we can reach out and offer support and resources to those still suffering in silence in violent or abusive relationships.”

Hope you can make it, but if not the above links can show you how you can continue to spread the word.

I can’t emphasize it enough: people who care about you do not abuse you. Abusers aren’t just those who physically attack their partners, they can exact emotional damage without ever laying a hand on you or calling you a bad name. If you are in a relationship and constantly feel as if you are “walking on eggshells,” then it’s quite possible you are being abused.

This was the first feminist magazine I read about women and art.

via ICA Home | The Heretics.

The Institute of Contemporary Art (ICA) presents the Boston premiere of THE HERETICS an experimental documentary by Joan Braderman which charts the history of a 1970’s NYC feminist art collective from the inside.

Thursday, Feb. 11 at 7 p.m. (followed by a Q & A with Braderman) and Sunday, Feb. 14 at 3:30 p.m. Tickets $8-$10 at (617) 478-3103 or www.icaboston.org.

About the film: Directed by world-renowned video artist Joan Braderman, THE HERETICS chronicles the twenty-year span of feminist art magazine HERESIES. Filmed across the globe, THE HERETICS features interviews and artwork of the artists who grew Heresies into a feminist forum for revolution. Such luminaries as Alice Walker, Adrienne Rich, and Barbara Kruger got their starts in the magazine that spawned ground-breaking photography, poetry, art and ideas.

About the director: Joan Braderman is an award-winning video artist and filmmaker whose work is in such permanent collections as MoMA and the Georges Pompidou Center in Paris. Her films and videos have been shown in film festivals around the world including: the Whitney Biennial, the Edinburgh Film Festival, VIDEO VISIONS in the New York Film Festival at Lincoln Center, and the British Film Theater in London. Braderman took an extended leave from teaching at Hampshire College, in Amherst, Mass. as Professor of Film and Video — to make this film.
